Ram Nath Kovind Elected the President of India
The Prime Minister Narendra Modi today congratulated Ram Nath Kovind on being elected the President of India.
“Congratulations to Shri Ram Nath Kovind Ji on being elected the President of India! Best wishes for a fruitful and inspiring tenure,” Modi said.
“Gladdened by the extensive support for Shri Ram Nath Kovind Ji among MPs and across various states. I thank members of the Electoral College,” Modi added.

Narendra Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and its supporting parties had declared Ram Nath Kovind as their candidate for the presidential race.
Kovind, who was the Bihar Governor, belongs to the Dalit (oppressed) community and is a lawyer by profession. Modi said that Kovind will make an exceptional President and continue to be a strong voice for the poor, downtrodden, marginalised sections of society.
The presidential election in India was held on July 17 and vote counting was done today, July 20. The term of the current President Pranab Mukherjee expires on July 24.

Congress president Sonia Gandhi and other opposition leaders in the Congress group had decided to field former Lok Sabha speaker Meira Kumar as their presidential candidate.

“I also congratulate Meira Kumar Ji for her campaign, which was in spirit of the democratic ethos and values we all are proud of,” the Prime Minister said.
The President is elected by an electoral college consisting of the elected members of both houses of Parliament (MPs), the elected members of the Legislative assemblies (MLAs) of the 29 states and the elected members of the legislative assemblies of the Union Territories of Delhi and Puducherry.
