UPDATE: March 3, 2017
This is a shocking display of a poor customer service by the ICICI Bank, which claims to be India’s leading bank. There is a yawning gap between its rhetoric and the reality of its work. It is not allowing me to use my own money, which is a blatant attack on my financial and human rights.
Although I have experienced ICICI Bank’s cruelty toward me in multiple cases, the present case is about a paltry amount that I wanted to send yesterday from my bank account (the case is described below).
I filled in the required forms at the ICICI Bank branch in Delhi and I was told by the bank executive that my formalities are complete and the money will be sent by yesterday (Thursday) evening itself. But surprisingly I did not get any intimation from the bank about the transaction.
Today, I kept trying through ICICI Bank’s Twitter account and email to know the status of my transaction. But the bank chose not to respond.
Finally, when it was becoming a pain in the neck for me, I wrote my tale of woe on my news site on the current page. After a few minutes, I got a call on my phone from the executive who handled my case the previous day at the ICICI Bank branch.
She told me that the payment I want to make has been stopped by the bank. I was shocked to hear that because it is not about the payment; rather it is about my commitment to the person who was supposed to receive the money. As ICICI Bank is a careless outfit, it cannot understand the value of a promise or a commitment.
I was told by the bank executive that the bank needs documented details of the beneficiary who, in fact, lives abroad and a citizen of another sovereign country. It sounds ridiculous if I have to ask for these documented details from a person whom I am sending a very small amount of money. But ICICI Bank fails to understand these subtleties of human behaviour.
When I asked ‘why the bank needs such redundant documents of the beneficiary,’ the bank executive could not explain. Rather the bank decided to treat me as a thief and stopped my payment, although I am an old customer of the bank and all my personal details are in the bank records.
The bank executive could not explain the need for these documents because it was an arbitrary demand by the bank and the demand was raised when the money should have reached the recipient.
Plus, there was no visible column on the bank forms that I had filled, asking me to provide these additional details of the beneficiary. That’s why I was told by the bank executive that the formalities including forms were complete.
Still, the bank preferred to harass me by stopping the payment. I asked the bank executive to send me an email explaining about the sudden demand from the bank.
Alas, I neither received any formal email from the bank nor has it cleared the payment. Clearly, I am suffering because of the bank’s callous attitude toward me.
Can a bank work and survive like this? No way. If ICICI Bank kept working in such an unprofessional and rigid manner, its days are numbered.
I will soon update this page with the progress in this case, as I have not yet received any email / information from the ICICI Bank about the said payment which needs to be made immediately.
I got an email from ICICI Bank staff on March 3: “As per telephonic discussion regarding the remittance request. Please provide the beneficiary id & address proof ( Like Passport, etc ) to process the request as required by compliance team.”
I replied on email: “I have explained the entire case at the following link. You may please decide about it while I request you again to clear the payment at the earliest – today (March 3) itself.”

The ICICI Bank has not yet cleared the payment.
March 3: Now I have sent by email 2 documents (date of birth proof and bank account details) of the beneficiary and have asked ICICI Bank to clear the payment.
Hope the payment will be cleared now.
@CKforCleanIndia Have given the documents. Pls. get payment cleared. @ICICIBank – No Work, No Response https://t.co/AlqXcMy5IB

Dear ICICI Bank,
My ICICI savings bank account number is: 025001001563. Yesterday (March 2, 2017), I made a foreign remittance of USD $380 to Russia from the ICICI bank branch in Sector 5, Dwarka, New Delhi.
I was told that my formalities are complete and my payment will be processed by yesterday evening itself. However, I have not yet received any intimation about it.
I have sent email to ICICI Customer Care and repeated messages on @ICICIBank_Care Twitter account, but could not know the status.
In the absence of any response from the ICICI Bank, I am writing this story on my news site so that its weblink could be circulated easily among various officers of the ICICI Bank.
Please process the said transaction immediately and inform me accordingly on my email id which is in your bank records – rr_thakur@yahoo.com
