Bangladeshi Peacekeeper Killed in South Sudan
A Bangladeshi peacekeeper from the United Nations Mission in South Sudan was killed Tuesday during an attack on a convoy delivering humanitarian aid to vulnerable civilians in Central Equatoria Province. The Nepalese peacekeepers immediately returned fire and the assailants retreated into the forest.
The UN Secretary-General António Guterres condemned the killing of the peacekeeper. He offered his deepest condolences to the bereaved family, and to the Government of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh.
The Secretary-General recalled that attacks against United Nations peacekeepers may constitute a war crime.
He reaffirmed his unwavering support to the brave men and women serving in the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) in their efforts to protect civilians and stabilize South Sudan.
