How NATO Plans to Counter Hybrid Threats
NATO Deputy Secretary General, Ms. Rose Gottemoeller, will attend a joint German Marshall Fund – Microsoft event on Countering Hybrid Threats today, 15 February 2018.
Ms. Gottemoeller will deliver a keynote speech and also participate in a panel discussion. The event will be livestreamed by the organizers.
Eighteen months after the launch of the “Global Strategy for the European Union’s Foreign and Security Policy,” European and transatlantic security is challenged by increasingly hybrid threats.
Over the past few years, state-sponsored actions have created a new, asymmetric capability to impact Western societies and the digital economies which underpin them.
Hybrid, and often digitally enabled attacks, have managed to help unleash outsized damage to democratic processes as well as economic and national security of Western nation-states.
The year 2018 will be a year when democratic governments can either work together to safeguard their democratic processes or face a future where digital economies — and even democracy itself — are more fragile.
The EU has a critical role to play in helping member states address these threats. And importantly, in the years ahead, technology companies have a high responsibility to help.
These new threats necessitate a shared responsibility and urgent, collective action by the private sector and governments around the world.
Organized by Microsoft in partnership with The German Marshall Fund of the United States (GMF), the event will gather experts from the European institutions, EU member states, think tanks, non-governmental organizations, the private sector, and media.
It will feature keynote remarks by Brad Smith, President and Chief Legal Officer of Microsoft, followed by a high-level panel to discuss the future of hybrid threats, opportunities for cybersecurity arms control discussions, and the urgency of protecting democracy and digital societies.
The event will also serve as the opening of Microsoft’s newly renovated event facility in the heart of Brussels. It will take place at the Microsoft Center, Rue Montoyer 51, 1000 Brussels, Belgium.
