NATO Informs Trump About Russia and Violence in Ukraine
NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg had a phone conversation with U.S. President Donald Trump on Sunday evening. According to NATO, both leaders reconfirmed the importance of the Alliance in troubled times.
In the past, Trump has been quite critical of NATO’s role and the U.S. funding to the 28-member Alliance, saying that America’s financial contribution to NATO is very high as compared to other member states.
However, Stoltenberg stressed the need for continued efforts to ensure fair burden-sharing or differential contribution among all NATO Allies.

According to the NATO communique, Trump and Stoltenberg reviewed progress on the fight against terrorism and on NATO defence spending.
They also discussed the uptick in violence in eastern Ukraine, and prospects for a peaceful settlement. The NATO chief recalled NATO’s consistent policy of strong defence and dialogue with Russia.
Stoltenberg and President Trump are expected to meet at the upcoming NATO Summit in Brussels in late May to discuss these issues.
This was Stoltenberg’s second phone conversation with President Trump since his election.
