Nobel Peace Prize for Abiy Ahmed Ali
Nobel Peace Prize for Abiy Ahmed Ali
The Norwegian Nobel Committee has decided to award the Nobel Peace Prize for 2019 to Ethiopian Prime Minister (PM) Abiy Ahmed Ali.
Abiy has been awarded the prize for his work in ending the 20-year stalemate between Ethiopia and Eritrea. He worked for a peace treaty in the Eritrean–Ethiopian war.
The 16-year old Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg and Reporters Without Borders (RSF) – which advocates for freedom of information and freedom of the press – were also among the favorites.
The name of Pakistan PM Imran Khan was also considered for Nobel Peace Prize because he has been working hard to establish peace between India and Pakistan.
The Nobel laureate receives a diploma, a medal, and a document confirming the prize amount, which is 10 million SEK (about US$1.5 million).
The 2019 Peace laureate Abiy Ahmed Ali is the first Ethiopian to be awarded a Nobel Prize. This year’s prize is also the 100th Nobel Peace Prize.
