Notice Issued to Rahul Gandhi over Foreign Citizenship
The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has issued a notice to Congress president Rahul Gandhi asking him to explain the factual position of his citizenship. The notice issued Monday (April 29, 2019) has given him a fortnight to respond.
The complaint questioning Rahul Gandhi’s citizenship was filed by a BJP leader Subramanian Swamy who has repeatedly been alleging that Rahul Gandhi is a British citizen, and therefore he is not eligible to contest elections in India.
In the ongoing Lok Sabha election, Rahul Gandhi is contesting from two constituencies: Amethi in Uttar Pradesh and Wayanad in Kerala.
Subramanian Swamy today mocked Congress president by tweeting, “Has MHA issued notice on my complaint to Buddhu on his British citizenship today?” Buddhu is a Hindi word which means an idiot.
Has MHA issued Notice on my Complaint to Buddhu on his British Citizenship today?

The MHA letter refers to Swamy’s complaint which states that a company named Backops Limited was registered in the United Kingdom in the year 2003, with address 51 Southgate Street, Winchester, Hampshire SO23 9EH and that Rahul Gandhi was one of the directors and secretary of the said company.
RMN News Service cannot independently confirm the veracity of the MHA letter which is available in the public domain on the Internet.
The letter adds that in the company’s annual returns filed on October 10, 2005 and October 31, 2006, Rahul Gandhi’s date of birth has been given as June 19, 1970 and that he had declared his nationality as British. According to the MHA letter, the dissolution application of the company, dated February 17, 2009, also referred to Rahul Gandhi’s nationality as British.
“You are requested to intimate the factual position in the matter to this ministry within a fortnight of the receipt of this communication,” MHA letter said.
